Pinnacles, Mulu National Park (Day 1)

I really have to finish up this post. I haven't even started on my Hong Kong trip and that was before Mulu!

So after much packing and planning, my hiking 'guide" Rachel, came up with a rough itinery. Photo-heavy below to illustrate our itinery :)

Day 1 in May 2011

Take early flight to Miri from KL.

* NOTE: Make sure your luggage bag is tagged properly by airport staff. My hiking bag went for a  detour to Kota Kinbalu for a day. Rach borrowed me her clothes for the day  and I mulled over how to survive on minimal underwear for the hike!

Our yummy breakfast in Wawasan 2020 courtesy of Jasper (you were a great host!).
L-R: Red wine chicken mee sua, kolo mee, fried "pak guo", and some soup that I did not quite catch the name

There are only 2 MAS flights a day to Mulu, so we took the earlier flight to maximize adventure time!

What greated us at the tiny air strip

Mulu  National Park lodgings
We paid around RM250 for a room with 3 beds at the time of writting for lodging at Mulu National Park. We were also required to pay RM10 for park entrance fees. A small price to pay for conservation.  We registered for all our planned trips at the check-in counter and paid for it at the same time. There are alot of combinations to go for but since our main purpose was climbing, we were very tight for time. After resting a bit and having an early dinner at the Park cafe, we proceeded to join the Night Shift.

Night Shift is a trip around the jungle at night by flashlight in total darkness. You feel slighly suffocated by the darkness pressing on you. Spooky stories of things that go bump in the night starts to run through your mind like a Rollerdex. Absolute silence must be kept while walking on the wooden planks.

After a somewhat uneventful night stroll, we headed back to our chalets to repack our gear, stow what we could with the camp and turned in for the night. For me, I slept in borrowed clothes and prayed desperately that my gear would come the next day as promised by MAS Officer McDougall (I hope I got his name right). Passing the night in worry is soo not the way to psyche yourself up.
