Staycation @ Studio M Hotel
There are moments when you just have to get away from everything. Studio M Hotel was my hidey hole this time when that feeling of wanting to have peace and quietness struck. Without needing to worry about groceries or cleaning my room. Just to wake up, listen to music, read and draw while sitting next to the enormous bay windows, with natural light making pretty shadows on the bed.
Studio M Hotel is an unassuming hotel tucked away on Nanson Road. You wouldn't know that it is a hotel even if you walked right past it. It is right behind Robertson Quay and near Mohammad Sultan Road so it is quite accessible to restaurants, pubs, lounges, etc. It is also just 1.3km from Orchard Road by feet power and it isn't all too bad. Yes, I had to break my hermitage to go to the Toy Fair.
The hotel is manned by a relatively young staff who are quite professional in dealing with visitors who have a serious case of jetlag, hangovers or just plain lost. They also deal with people like moi, the ones who are seeking refuge from the world for the weekend.
Key cards are required to access the floor of your residence so that is a security measure to make sure no one disturbs you. When I first walked into the room, the first thing that greeted me were the windows with sheer curtains, letting in just enough of light to make it a cosy place to be in.
The bathrooms and toilet is separated and really quite small. I'm a US size S and I already have trouble when I want to flush the toilet and trying to avoid any back splash at the same time. The sink is under the stairs so that means you don't have to inhale any toxic gases when you want to brush your teeth after someone did a Number 2. Toiletries include:
- toothbrush
- sanitary bag
- soap
- shampoo, conditioner (the usual)
- shower cap
- cotton buds and facial cotton
There are no cupboards (to save space) but there is a rail with hanger on it. Laundry bags are in the drawer below. Tea making facilities are next to the sink. One thing I liked about the hotel room were the big safety deposit boxes which could fit the entire laptop comfortably.
The TV is placed near the foot of the bed at the same ledge which doubles up as a bay area seat if you want it to be. People with longer legs should be careful not to kick the TV off when they are tossing in bed. Unfortunately the air conditioner it right above the head board. Those with sinus problems... beware. It can wreak havoc on your Grecian feature. I had to bury my head under the covers to keep my nose from getting irritated at the dry air.
On the second floor, there is a nice private work area with sufficient power points and even a small sofa for breaks just in case you get a writer's block or just feel too lazy to take a nap downstairs. Room service menu is just next to the phone. I checked out the prices and it is surprisingly not too expensive. I mean, c'mon... just the word "room service" means less than great meals at cut throat prices. Prices listed at Studio M Hotel are comparable with any decent cafe prices. Perhaps it is due to the fact that there is a cafe and 2 restaurants on the premises?
Did I mention the cafe is a 24 hours Espressamente illy cafe for those with jet lag and the restaurants are ta.ke and Malted Milk? Malted Milk boasts a huge variety of beer including honeydew and lychee beer while ta.ke is for the more chichi sort of alfresco, sipping cocktails under the stars sort of thing.

However with all that said, I seriously would not recommend this hotel to those travelling with kids. Furniture corners and the door divider thing for the bathroom and toilets are really sharp and I lost count of the number of times I stumbled across the divider (because it's the same colour as the door frame [-___-]) or banged against the side of the bed.
