The Ship @ Damansara Uptown

It has been around 10 years since I last boarded. My previous journey aboard this vessel started elsewhere (in town I think) but this time I decided to board at Damansara Uptown.

Can you guess what is the utensil for?
Since it was my birthday, we decided to revisit some old memories at The Ship, which carries the tagline "The Best Steak In Town". Honestly, I probably won't say it is the best steak in town but it was certainly the best in its heydays. Right now, I feel like an auntie telling grandmother stories whenever I say, "Last time..."

The Ship is one of the oldest Western restaurants in Malaysia, where the proprietors set out to serve good affordable Western food during times when Western cuisine was reserved for high end hotels. Complete with interior decoration and serving staff acting like crew members aboard a cruise vessel, it used to be the place where guys would impress girls on their first dates.

The restaurant's location at Damansara Utama is quite dark, with shops on either side of it being closed during the night. With the ostentatious crime rate in KL now, please park in front of/ as near to the restaurant if possible. If you have a bigger group, park elsewhere and walk over.

With any meal at The Ship, warm bread rolls are served once you place your order.

We started off the meal with a half dozen escargots bourguinonne (escargot baked in chablis garlic sauce). I suspect the escargots were the kind that you can buy off the shelf in the super but heck, the sauce makes everything good.

I had the fillet mignon. It is served with fries, turkey bacon (this place is halal), boiled mixed vegetables and asparagus. It was a pleasant surprise to get white asparagus instead of the the usual green scrawny ones.I ordered my meat to be medium well and it came out just right.

Parents decided to go fish and meat instead due to religious and health reasons although they did sneak bites of mine to try.

Grilled air flown salmon steak with fries and parley butter.
The well-loved The Ship chicken chop
The chicken chop would have been better if there was some sauce that goes on it. It was quite dry when I took a bite, as if the fryer had an agenda to get it as dry as the bread crumbs on it.

Once the dishes started, it doesn't stop until you have gotten all that you ordered. It's like the serving crew is in a rush to serve. In that rush, we had many sour faced workers who gave me the feeling, "Can we close the shop now? I want to go home but you are making me work."

Perhaps it was their KPI to get food as fast as they can to the hungry patrons and it was a full house, but it doesn't hurt to be courteous.

The food is not the greatest or the best. It was the "it" place to be in the past. My best experience with the meal is the appetizer sauce. yummm, sauce..

Now it's a place to go for an affordable family dinner. Kids would love the experience as the menu has quite a bit of fried food (those that kids scream over although it will clog arteries) and the interesting interior decoration. Watch those wooden corners though, nasty bump will result.

Until the next post, anchors away!
