Spruce, Singapore

You do not eat in the office cafeteria for farewell lunches, ever. Nor do you go to a restaurant/fastfood/burger joint/kopitiam that you go to everyday with the person who is leaving the company.

You go to somewhere nicer, maybe a little more posh, something out of the usual Friday routine.

We ended up a quiet place in the rear end of Orchard, Spruce.

Plenty of parking if this is spot to dine but getting here involves a good 5-10 minutes walk from the bus stop. Being located in Phoenix Park may not have the best frontage for a restaurant but when we arrived, they were serving a healthy lunch crowd.

We dined outdoors where trees were a plenty and no one smoked.

The starter was the recommended Spruce Dips (SGD16) with dips of guacamole, tuna conserva, hummus and tomato salsa. The bread hardened quite fast in the open environment but that's the sign of freshness I guess. The tuna conserva and guacamole were really delicious that after awhile we ate straight from the ramekin.

Another mixed Starter platter we got had Kurobuta meatballs and lovely squid. Grilled squid is tricky. It gets too tough if left on the fire for too long but this turned out just nice. Our jaws were not injured in the process of chewing.

Going on with the Kurobuta theme, we also ordered freshly made tagliatelle served with kurobuta pork bolognese (SGD22). The tagliatelle is similar to fettuccine but more rough in texture. Portions were huge! After awhile we got a bit tired of the never ending pasta.

Roasted pullet chicken with broccolini, mashed potates in thyme veloute (SGD23)
The lunch/dinner menu was average and tastes were sort of muted for me.

The good thing about this place though is that the attentiveness of their serving staff. Never did I have to call for a water refill. The cool outdoor setting makes it great for a lunch/dinner for 2 or a business lunch meeting.
